Divine Whip

Image
I should have listened to my uncle when he asked me not to buy this whip. I didnt believe quite then that the whip had dark powers and could trouble the inner balances of oneself. I bought it because it looked so lovely. A whip in the form of a cobra. Just 200 years ago almost all objects had gods on them. Nut Crackers, Utensils, Furniture, Bullock Cart, Houses were smeared with the gods. Todays satellites too! as the belief still remains. Poojas & rituals has remained but the ideas of shapes derived from the gods have almost dissappeared. Todays objects dont have gods even in some new temples. I didnt listen to my uncle when he said that to buy this whip requires a special ritual and only the farmer who uses should buy. Socially it made complete sense but modern me simply dismissed the logic. I was eager to show it to my professors and make it an object of study as it contained nuiances of ritualistic mysticism, godly forms, ritual object, post modern interest etc etc. It was simp

Scarecrows of Inhauna

Once I said to a scarecrow, "You must be tired of standing in this lonely field.” And he said, "The joy of scaring is a deep and lasting on, and I never tire of it." Said I, after a minute of thought, "It is true; for I too have known that joy." Said he, "Only those who are stuffed with straw can know it." Then I left him, not knowing whether he had complimented or belittled me. A year passed, during which the scarecrow turned philosopher. And when I passed by him again I saw two crows building a nest under his hat. Khalil Gibran

Sahib Biwi aur Gulam

I watched it once, watched it twice, dying to watch it for the third time. I was curious about the recall value the movie bears. It is a great movie well crafted but what makes it to see again. The story and the script has an unusual quality of surprise. It takes you to a world of imagination like any beautifully written book. It constructs reality which we havent experienced but well rooted into our social life which makes it seemingly relatable and not get confused with the art bit. Characters are exploited for a surreal presence. I keep remembering the blacks and the whites of the movie, the sunny visuals to the deep dark scenes, it is a great visual experience. V K Murthy (Cinematographer) captures the tones quite deeply to the theme. The story is set in a zamindars haveli - the backdrop. Mixture of stories weave to capture interesting dilemmas of life. I keep remembering the smiles of two beautiful ladies Waheeda Rehman and Meena Kumari. They smile for different reasons and differ

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg began in 1971 when Michael Hart was given an operator's account with $100,000,000 of computer time in it by the operators of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois. This was totally serendipitous, as it turned out that two of a four operator crew happened to be the best friend of Michael's and the best friend of his brother. Michael just happened "to be at the right place at the right time" at the time there was more computer time than people knew what to do with, and those operators were encouraged to do whatever they wanted with that fortune in "spare time" in the hopes they would learn more for their job proficiency. At any rate, Michael decided there was nothing he could do, in the way of "normal computing," that would repay the huge value of the computer time he had been given ... so he had to create $100,000,000 worth of value in some other manner. An hour and 47 minutes later

Do kids have time to play?

Image
Yes they do! Kids make time to play. Recently I was testing one of my games with a group of students from a local school. Kids came from same locality and knew each-other quite well. I am talking about 10-12 yr old. The idea of a friends group is very strong among kids. They know their friends house, friends parents, the toys they own, their relatives, and sometimes even their friends interests. They share everything as they have to be accepted in the group. Many time it depends on the city culture also. Smaller towns seem to have more freedom for kids compared to cities. They have a strong sense of togetherness, and share strong communication. It is also because that the friendship stays with the friends presence at the school. Same school means more things in common to share. Kids make time to play, they plan and decide. They improve everyday on their previous attempts of play. They don't usually compete but they participate quite keenly. Their presence is very important. Eveni

Casino Royale

I payed 300 rs for 2 tickets to watch the mean bond performing his antics. The bloody violence, beautiful landscapes and boring conversations somehow confused me to value the real worth of the ticket! Dusty traffic greeted as we decided to walk uphill home. It was difficult for me to understand what people liked about the movie. The images however seemed a part of daily ritual of life, something we seem to relate and understand quite unassumingly. Violence, murders, conflicting arguements, love seem to happen all around. Its nothing new or exciting. Papers, social stories and TV continiously show us the world. A big eventful movie seem to me simply an insert of the same desperate theme of life.
