Light in darkness

I see myself dragged into a lot of activities daily, into preoccupied thinking, into reactive states of mind, into the world of worries, into disturbance, into tiredness, into heaviness, into narrower space, into a dispersion, into the gray, towards the darkness, not a pure dark, into the shades.....i look for rest......then i do hope for the light

Indian cricket lives on!

Watching India Srilanka match was a terrible experience not because of watching India losing but because of watching 'ad' ruled TV! I hardly remember the match as it was infested with a million ads. TV viewing itself is a fragmented experience and cricket which is obviously a great place for adds - as it is played for the whole day (no other game is played for the whole day!).The last balls of the overs were desperately cut by the unstoppable adds. I had to press the mute button almost a thousand times. The connection with the game and the score was simply lost due to the thunderstorm of ads! The whole match was a choppy experience. I hardly remember the ads either. TV is almost like any yellow pages, hardly any content, hardly any entertainment. News could be the quickest way to create some content but looks like the news channels naturally have more breaks catering to ads than any other channels. The longest no add content I have watched recently was the football worldcup - a...

Owl tree today

Owl Tree didnt change suprisingly. It stood still. Again posing staring towards my window cill. The gardner poured pipefull of water at its claws. Single legged owl smiled more as the water filled the claws. In the morning the jasmine flowers fell towards the ground, making the owl loose its beauty spots. Gardener didnt see the owl but the owl tree was waiting to touch the cold water of the pipe in the hot summer sun. Well the owl tree never flew all night.

Owl Tree

A tree in front of my house looked like a gaint owl. Well, the gaint owl contained a tree in it. It stood on one of its legs on the ground and one of its eyes opened. It looked densed with leafy fur and feathery patches of leaves. The sun stood behind and top making the leaves of its shoulders shine with striking light. As the owl smiled tree seemed dissappered. The tree appeared as and when the owl dissappered. Owl had two horns which looked like its pointed ears. The owl looked frozen like a statue yet the leaves fluttered in the thin wind of the coastal summer. Every fur danced as the leaves swayed shining in the bright light. The body of the owl created its own darkness from the deeper shadows of the brighter light. So the owl looked darker in the middle compared to its ends. The wings folded into the body and shoulders profiled. While I watched, a woman came and plucked the white jasmines from its body to make a garland. The owl stood by the dark night, waiting to change.

After continiously talking for eight hours pinning some interesting concepts in Interaction design, I got a sore throat! Next day I forced the class to discuss more and more to keep the momentum on a holiday! ( Forgive me guys!.....Govt holidays are at the wrong time!). Well we hmmm I wanted to runt more on conceptual models, low fidelity prototypes, flow sensitive frameworks, contexual data, design and PDA....etc etc well with full volume, morning class was quite a sight. Laptops flooded the huge conference table and it seemed like I am talking to double the crowd! 10 high end machines ( around 10 gb ram together, a lakh gb of space, high speed processors, wireless global internet conectivity, multi to power of multi functionality, lots of electricity, stressful mental activity of creation, query mining and 10 seem to be interested souls! Well.....we were discussing designing with computers after all!

Savakka's Phone

Image
Savakkas son installed a new public telephone in the village of Asundi. Not many use it though as his house is in the interiors of the village. Children of the school bump into this phone daily. It is simply an object of play. They insert a coin from the top and act like pressing the buttons and also reherse a conversation before reseting it to get back their coin. They are amused to see the coin coming back. Almost every child small or big attending the school who take this road seem to use it. During the time it has become popular as play phone! ........till Savakkas son will find the reason for its popularity.

The Solitary Pigeon

Image
Many days I wake up finding pigeons on my head. I get deeply irritated and loose my cool trying to push them out from my house (given by Government). I dont know whether thay act dumb or they are really dumb. They just dont find their way out till I perform the Mahabharat act of pushing them out with anything I can lay my hands on (mostly a broom). So everymorning before I see myself, or god, my wife or my pillow I see the pigeons. They make the most silliest sounds and act as if they care a damn about me. I was reading "My Environment" by Purnachandra Tesjaswi (Kuvempu's son). In his beautiful book he also has similar problems but his encounters with the pigeons are more drastic. He says they like to keep the nests in safe places even near the humans as they will be protected by other predators. The logic seemed convincing but still "Why my house?". Yesterday, as usual after a bad morning encounter with the pigeon, I made some time for myself to look out throug...

Divine Whip

Image
I should have listened to my uncle when he asked me not to buy this whip. I didnt believe quite then that the whip had dark powers and could trouble the inner balances of oneself. I bought it because it looked so lovely. A whip in the form of a cobra. Just 200 years ago almost all objects had gods on them. Nut Crackers, Utensils, Furniture, Bullock Cart, Houses were smeared with the gods. Todays satellites too! as the belief still remains. Poojas & rituals has remained but the ideas of shapes derived from the gods have almost dissappeared. Todays objects dont have gods even in some new temples. I didnt listen to my uncle when he said that to buy this whip requires a special ritual and only the farmer who uses should buy. Socially it made complete sense but modern me simply dismissed the logic. I was eager to show it to my professors and make it an object of study as it contained nuiances of ritualistic mysticism, godly forms, ritual object, post modern interest etc etc. It was simp...

Scarecrows of Inhauna

Image
Once I said to a scarecrow, "You must be tired of standing in this lonely field.” And he said, "The joy of scaring is a deep and lasting on, and I never tire of it." Said I, after a minute of thought, "It is true; for I too have known that joy." Said he, "Only those who are stuffed with straw can know it." Then I left him, not knowing whether he had complimented or belittled me. A year passed, during which the scarecrow turned philosopher. And when I passed by him again I saw two crows building a nest under his hat. Khalil Gibran
