Departures

Director: Yojiro Takita Brilliant piece of work. Must see! Daigo Kobayashi is lively and shy! Very quickly the viewer is taken into a strange situation revolving around the idea of death or life around death, what ever you want to call it! Very gripping and thematic, a lot to learn form the traditional cultures and see it operating sometimes in modernity. Now showing on UTV World Movies

Chak De - A cry of its own

***** Must See :-) I recollected Hoosiers 1986....but Chak De has a cry of its own. Repeating themes/remakes are unavoidable but its a pleasure to see a "cry" of its own. Its like painters kept on painting portraits but each one of them had its own brush of life. It looks like we have almost exhausted all our themes and few left will be discovered as the society shows itself up. But if people stick to their cries, themes will get richer with variety! Its quite a waste of time to copy a storyline though it sells but seeing it again is a good exercise. Listen to the cry....newer social messages are taking this interesting form if well said Lately I watched "Bheja Fry" ....well made but copied....again still managed a cry of its own! :-)

Three Seasons

"Can anyone say How many stalks are in a rice field? How many bends are in a river? How many layers are in a cloud? Can anyone sweep the leaves of the forest? and tell the wind - shake the trees no more? How many leaves must a silkworm eat? To make the dress of colors from the past How much rain must fall from the sky? Before the Ocean overflows with tears How many years must the moon agebefore it is old? In the middle of the night, The moon comes and waits nearby, He who can steal my heart, I will forever sing joyful songs.

Let me sing you a waltz Out of nowhere, out of my thoughts Let me sing you a waltz About this one night stand You were for me that night Everything I always dreamt of in life But now you're gone You are far gone All the way to your island of rain It was for you just a one night thing But you were much more to me Just so you know I hear rumors about you About all the bad things you do But when we were together alone You didn't seem like a player at all I don't care what they say I know what you meant for me that day I just wanted another try I just wanted another night Even if it doesn't seem quite right You meant for me much more Than anyone I've met before One single night with you little Jesse Is worth a thousand with anybody I have no bitterness, my sweet I'll never forget this one night thing Even tomorrow, another arms My heart will stay yours until I die Let me sing you a waltz Out of nowhere, out of my blues Let me sing you a waltz About this lovely one n...

Mausam

Sometimes you are simply lucky if you find some good movies shopping. You search the DVDs and its simply hard to choose a good one. Movies seem to be like memories of dumb stories, unecessary violence, conflicting family drama, stressed comedy....etc all in the name of entertainment. Very few are truly expressive. Very few creative directors are able to "make" a movie, weave it and give a clear expression. Gulzar does it in Mausam exceptionally well. Its so refreshing to see a non judgemental, well woven and sensitive theme so beautifully shown.

In winter still

I happened to listen to Umesh Shukla the creator of "In winter still". Soft spoken and enthusiastic about the computer animation world, he is exploring painting world for newer experiences in animation movies. He showed a delighting colorful movie about 'Monet and his garden'. Their team are working on developing soft tools for a new kind of animation experience. Sahib Biwi aur Gulam

I watched it once, watched it twice, dying to watch it for the third time. I was curious about the recall value the movie bears. It is a great movie well crafted but what makes it to see again. The story and the script has an unusual quality of surprise. It takes you to a world of imagination like any beautifully written book. It constructs reality which we havent experienced but well rooted into our social life which makes it seemingly relatable and not get confused with the art bit. Characters are exploited for a surreal presence. I keep remembering the blacks and the whites of the movie, the sunny visuals to the deep dark scenes, it is a great visual experience. V K Murthy (Cinematographer) captures the tones quite deeply to the theme. The story is set in a zamindars haveli - the backdrop. Mixture of stories weave to capture interesting dilemmas of life. I keep remembering the smiles of two beautiful ladies Waheeda Rehman and Meena Kumari. They smile for different reasons and differ...

Casino Royale

I payed 300 rs for 2 tickets to watch the mean bond performing his antics. The bloody violence, beautiful landscapes and boring conversations somehow confused me to value the real worth of the ticket! Dusty traffic greeted as we decided to walk uphill home. It was difficult for me to understand what people liked about the movie. The images however seemed a part of daily ritual of life, something we seem to relate and understand quite unassumingly. Violence, murders, conflicting arguements, love seem to happen all around. Its nothing new or exciting. Papers, social stories and TV continiously show us the world. A big eventful movie seem to me simply an insert of the same desperate theme of life.
