Whole-part-whole relationship

Whole is made of parts Parts make the whole Whole affects parts Parts affects whole Whole is whole, part is part Nikhilji's music demonstrates how a new understanding of whole(Raag) is created. His work on parts(Swar Vistar) make a new effect of the whole(Raag) and they say Raagas are not created by man (Apourasheya). He affects the creation of 'nonman' Thats why it feels eternal. Well its damn abstract! Gestalts haven't dealt with "Whole is whole, part is part" concepts. This is very Indian! :-)

Elaboration - extension of series Improvisation - addition of interest Abstraction - putting oneself in new situation Expression - rendering sensual Pattern - arrangements of beauty Composition - significant structure Cycle - a start to completion

Design Process for Architecture!

A hut teaches a lot. It gives a definition of need. Hut is basically a bed room. When someone sleeps, he probably needs protection and a little privacy so the idea of walls come in. Almost all other activities used to happen outdoor. Bathing, cooking, eating, work, entertainment, learning....all of these used to happen outside the hut at least in India. It is quite wonderful that all of these activities have become indoor in modern world. This gives a great clue for design. Why do people come to architects? May be it is difficult to address their own needs and probably see their spatial requirements. What I mean here is, for various activities of living there will exist an spatial requirement. Lets say we can solve this by simply working out dimensions. Dimensions are truthful as we can measure it. But this might not suffice completely. Needs for walls or spatial division comes out of either protection or privacy. If I look at todays urban requirement for a young couple who are working...

Virtual vs Real

I have often encountered this peculiar situation when the final design looks very different from what was imagined. Most of the design process is imagining a concept. Ideas in mind are sketched, drawn, detailed, prototyped, colored etc and later produced. When the concept is produced you see the real. For me at-least, the real needs a lot of work quite different from how you had imagined about the concept. Designers often live in the world of conceptions and forget to see the real, physical form. I have heard graphic designers failing badly while creating symbols, symbols start looking like something else and dangerously change meaning. Architect often dream about great spaces and end up creating clumsy corridors. One of my famous teacher architect once contemplated that the space he created was like the outer 'Prakara' of the chidambaram temple but for me it looked grossly like a simple huge space with no feeling of any sort of wall what so ever. I have seen Product Designers s...
