Shree and space
Looks like the next few posts will be most likely on Nikhilji's magic! I was listening to his "Shree". He has an absolutely beautiful insight of the rag. The rag is the framework which he can shake so that it affects us and we listen to his new magic with Rag. I see he has spent a lot of time listening and seeing the opportunity of beauty in the rag. He is the quickest artiste to establish this effect of the raga and its beauty to the listeners. After this goal, he is in mastery of what improvisations can do recreate the effect of the aspects of beauty of the rag. Rag is central in his approach. "Bandish" is there to hold the rag. Alankars are his very personal creations only to reenforce the beauty of the rag.
Why Rag affects us most?
A very nice thing to think about. Rag is the framework which needs to be explored to complete it. A very open opportunity to question and recreate beauty. Left to creator but yet complete. Form is bound in rag and the sense of sounds create just the "Rag" effects. Though there is no metaphors in pure sounds "Rag" can be a possible group itself. But more or less the goal is to feel the secrets of the "Rag". For that you need to challenge your aesthetics with intellect but also be very firm on the ground. WHat a beautiful challenge! This sophistication of the creation of Rag affects us.
I am unable to listen to any other artiste from a long time now! after listening to Nikhilji.
It will take years to vocalists to achieve this approach. Their breath and vocals are just not enough to bring the magic of the rag of course with some notable mentions like Ustad Amir Khan Saheb, Pandit Kumar Gandharv, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Kishori Tayi.
